MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. -- An assumption of command ceremony for Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 122 is scheduled for Nov. 14 at 10:00 A.M. at MCAS Yuma.
The squadron, originally based at MCAS Beaufort, South Carolina, transitioned from the F/A-18 Hornet to the F-35B Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter and is slated to receive its first F-35B aircraft in January 2018. Lt. Col. John P. Price will assume command of the squadron.
The F-35B Joint Strike Fighter is a supersonic, multi-role, multi-service aircraft that represents a quantum leap in air dominance capability. It combines next-generation fighter characteristics of radar-evading stealth, supersonic speed, fighter agility and advanced logistical support with the most powerful and comprehensive integrated sensor package of any fighter aircraft in history to provide unprecedented lethality and survivability.
The F/A-18 Hornet, first introduced to the Marine Corps in 1983, is a multiārole fighter and attack aircraft that employs conventional fixed-wing takeoffs and landings.
