MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. -- The Marine Corps Air Station Miramar Falcons continue to battle for the title of “Best in the West” with another win in the books at Paige Fieldhouse aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., Sept. 9.
The Falcons shut down the 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion Gators 14-0.
The Falcons started strong with a touchdown, punched in by Falcons’ running back Kyle Byrdsong, three minutes into the first quarter, but the Gators blocked the extra point.
Not letting up with their momentum, Falcons’ quarterback Jabari Moore connected with Falcons’ wide receiver Ian Sumner for a second touchdown with five minutes left in the first quarter. To make up for the blocked point earlier, the Falcons attempted a two-point conversion and were successful making the score 14-0.
The defense held the Gators back the rest of the game making it another win for the Falcons.
“We may make mistakes, but we keep the other team off the board with our strong defense which is what we need to do to win a championship,” said Gregory Sargeant, the offensive captain and a defensive end with the MCAS Miramar Falcons.
Even with a tough defense, the Falcons hope to improve their running game to put more points on the score board next game, explained Sargeant.
The season is off to a good start for the Falcons, and they plan to keep improving throughout the season.
“We have a great group of guys out here and they are working hard,” said Karkeis Artis, a middle linebacker with the MCAS Miramar Falcons. “We are going to win it all.”
The Falcons face their next opponent, the 11th Marines Cannon Cockers, at 5 p.m. Sept. 17 at Paige Fieldhouse.
