Lieutenant Colonel Sweigart graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History from Pensacola Christian College in May 2003 then commissioned in August 2005 through Officer Candidates School. Upon graduation from The Basic School in March 2006, he reported to Marine Aircraft Group 42, Detachment C (MAG-42, Det C) at Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base New Orleans, LA and served as the S-1 and legal officer. In October 2006, he began training as a student pilot with Training Squadron 2 (VT-2) in Milton, FL, and in May 2007, he continued his training with Training Squadron 21 (VT-21) in Kingsville, TX. In August 2008, he earned his wings as pilot and reported to VFA-106 for training in the F/A-18.
In July 2009, First Lieutenant Sweigart reported to Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 115 (VMFA-115) in Beaufort, SC. During this time, he fulfilled many roles, including Schedules Officer, Flight Officer, Airframes Division Officer-in-Charge, and Director of Safety and Standardization/Aviation Safety Officer. He deployed in August 2009 in support of Western Pacific Unit Deployment Program (WESTPAC UDP) and was promoted to Captain in November 2009. He deployed again in September 2011 in support of WESTPAC UDP and completed the Aviation Safety Officer Course and Tactical Air Control Party Course in 2011 and 2012 respectively.
In July 2012, Captain Sweigart was assigned as the Battalion Air Officer/Forward Air Controller with 3rd Battalion, 2d Marines and deployed in March 2013 with Battalion Landing Team 3/2, 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard the USS Kearsarge in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He also completed Expeditionary Warfare School in 2013.
In December 2013, Captain Sweigart reported to Marine All Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 533 (VMFA(AW)-533) in Beaufort, SC, where he served as Flight Officer and Pilot Training Officer. He completed his third WESTPAC UDP in April 2015. Promoted in October 2015, Major Sweigart then deployed to Sheikh Isa Air Base, Bahrain in support of Operation Inherent Resolve from March 2016 to October 2016. During this tour, he completed Marine Division Tactics Course (MDTC) and Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course (WTI). Following this tour, Major Sweigart served with Marine Aviation Training Site Systems (MATSS) Beaufort from January to June 2017.
After attending U.S. Army Command and General Staff College from July 2017 to June 2018, Major Sweigart reported to Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 251 (VMFA-251) in August 2018. He served as the Operations Officer and returned to Shiekh Isa Air Base in Bahrain in support of Operation Spartan Shield, Operation Inherent Resolve, and Operation Freedom’s Sentinel from December 2019 to March 2020. He then served as Aircraft Maintenance Officer with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 312 (VMFA-312) and completed another WESTPAC UDP from August 2020 to March 2021.
In July 2021, Major Sweigart, selected as a Marine Corps Inter-Service Exchange Officer to the Navy, reported to the Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center (NAWDC) in Fallon, NV. He promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in November 2021, and during the next three years, he served as an Air Wing Fallon Overall Instructor, member of the Integration Department, and STRIKE Department Executive Officer; he also qualified in the F/A-18EF, EA-18G, and F-16. Following his time at NAWDC, Lieutenant Colonel Sweigart was assigned as the Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron Executive Officer on Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in May 2025.
Lieutenant Colonel Sweigart has accumulated over 2,000 flight hours in the F/A-18A-F and F-16A/B and has over 350 F/A-18 combat hours over Iraq, Syria, and the Arabian Gulf. His decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal-Strike/Flight with Bronze Numeral 6, two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, and four Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals.
