Marine Corps Community Services hosted a Trees for Troops event aboard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California, Dec. 2.

Sponsored by the Christmas Spirit Foundation and FedEx, the Trees for Troops program delivered approximately 200 trees to distribute to service members ranked sergeant or below and their families.

“This is for the Marines that may need a little extra help during the holidays,” said Greg Weigman, an event coordinator with Marine Corps Community Services.

Every year, FedEx helps deliver more than 18,000 real Christmas trees to more than 60 military bases around the world.

“It’s a way for us to take some of the stress away from the Marines that already have a pretty stressful life,” said Weigman. “Now, they can save some money and time that could be better spent on their families.”

The tree giveaway was not restricted to service members with families; single service members were welcomed as well.

“Unfortunately, I don’t have the ability to go home and spend Christmas with my family this year,” said Cpl. Thomas Willson, an aircraft attendant with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron. “Having the opportunity to actually have a tree and bring a little bit of Christmas here makes a big difference to me. It will actually feel like Christmas now.”

Trees for Troops is made possible through donations, which can be made at http://www.christmasspiritfoundation.org.
