NNOA holds PME for officer advancement

Marines and Sailors from Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar with the National Naval Officer Association (NNOA) participated in a professional military education class aboard MCAS Miramar, Calif., Nov. 18.

The class was held to strengthen and reinforce naval officers in their understanding and appreciation of the role of senior enlisted service members.
The question-and-answer session given aboard the air station highlighted the role a senior enlisted advisor plays in a unit.

“It’s an obligation for me to be here, it’s a part of my duty,” said Sgt. Maj. Ronald Green, I Marine Expeditionary Force sergeant major. “They call, I come. There is no place I’d rather be than here tonight sharing my knowledge.”

The members were able to ask sergeants major and command master chiefs various questions regarding leadership policies and advice.

“It’s important to be able to hear from senior leaders what they feel is the key role of a senior enlisted advisor,” said Capt. Matthew Bowman, a professional military education coordinator with the NNOA. “It’s not often we get to siphon the experience that we had available tonight in this room.”

Hearing the thought process and experience of sergeants major and command master chiefs gives us the ability to better lead our Marines as officers, added Bowman.

The NNOA, reestablished in 2006, actively supports the development of a diverse officer corps through recruitment, career retention, professional development and cultural diversity. The organization regularly gives classes to help junior and mid-grade minority officers excel in their regular duties. NNOA has members of all ranks and ethnic groups and promotes an atmosphere encouraging self-improvement and forward thinking.

The NNOA encourages all officers to attend their monthly meetings. For more information on the National Naval Officers Association please visit http://www.nnoa-camppendleton.org.
