MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. - Marines and Sailors with Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing conducted a station-wide cleanup aboard MCAS Miramar, California, April 20.

Service members organized the cleanup in recognition of Earth Month.

“I think it’s important for Marines to do this kind of event so they know the importance of helping the environment,” said Sgt. Hai Vuong, an imagery analyst with Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron (MWHS) 3.

More than 250 service members were divided into six groups. Each was responsible for cleaning a sector of the base.

During the cleanup, Marines and Sailors cut grass, pulled weeds and collected trash on base. They also conducted a cleanup alongside major
roadways bordering the air station.

“It’s good to clean our base and keep it presentable,” said Vuong. “We’re doing our part and showing the community that we take care of what we have.”

Service members also used this as an opportunity to highlight the environmental stewardship of the installation.

The station commanding officer and sergeant major visited each of the sectors to give their appreciation to all the service members.

“Thank you to all of you who came out here to help clean,” said Col. John Farnam, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar commanding officer, during a speech at the end of the cleanup. “It was a big job that needed to be done and you guys did a great job.”

Marines and Sailors aboard the base plan to continue to keep their workplace and home looking the best they can.
